Glassner Autumn Challenge

The 2015 Glassner Autumn Challenge will be held Saturday, October 10, 2015. This is the 13th annual century ride held in memory of Dr. Jim Glassner, a longtime friend and supporter of cycling in central Alabama. A member of the Montgomery Bicycle Club, Jim was killed in a cycling accident on December 16, 2001. We renamed our century event (which we have been running since the 80’s) in his honor. He was an avid cyclist and the Autumn Challenge is dedicated to his love of cycling.

Georgia Bikefest

Georgia BikeFest is a rolling celebration of biking. The thrill and freedom of the open road culminate to create one of the best festivals of the year.  Nothing beats enjoying the changing leaves of the fall season from the seat of your bike as you pedal from rest stop to rest stop.

Multiple rides are available from a century to short 10 mile rides, all fully supported. Rides are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

After the ride and a hot shower, there is plenty to do. There are bands Friday and Saturday, downtown Columbus is blocks away and there are plenty of festivities to be enjoyed. As with any ride, it is the people that make it great, and Georgia BikeFest always attracts the entertaining ones.

Most folks will arrive Friday, Oct. 9 and return Sunday, Oct. 11, but that’s up to you.

Sunday you’ll probably want to explore Dauphin Island itself. Lots of quiet roads to ride on and lots of activities, including beaches, Audubon Bird Sanctuary, Estuarium, Fort Gaines, and more .

Lodging

Lots of choices. There is a bed and breakfast, cottage, motel, campgrounds, RV parks, and houses and condos to rent.

Tannehill Ironworks

  • Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Linking Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park with the pretty little college town of Montevallo, where mule-drawn wagons once hauled Tannehill pig iron for rail shipment, the Ironworks Century will take riders on a journey through history on seldom-cycled scenic back roads.

Historical note: 2015 marks the 150th anniversary of the destruction of the original Tannehill blast furnaces, which helped supply iron to the Confederate foundries and gun works in Selma.  Tannehill was targeted by Union cavalry during Wilson’s Raid in March 1865; the same brigade then pushed on to Tuscaloosa and burned the university, which was a military school at that time.

With the move to an August date, the Ironworks Century saw tremendous growth in 2014, so for 2015 we’re making a few changes to better accommodate the greater number of riders – and the summer heat.  The start/finish location will move to the Farley Field area at the north end of the park, providing more parking room, more pavilion space and ready access to restrooms and showers, while the mass start time will move up an hour to 7:00 AM to get everyone out of the afternoon sun just that much sooner.  Also, in the first route change since 2012, the course has been made flatter and faster by eliminating those infamous tough outbound climbs across Shades Mountain.  Overall elevation gain for the full century will remain around 5000 ft, though, so it won’t exactly be pool-table flat.  Distance options for 2015 will be 16, 42, 73 and 100 miles, while rest stop intervals have been reduced to 16 miles or less.

Expect smooth pavement, nice scenery and a good mix of flat stretches and rolling countryside.  None of the climbs have any steep parts that stay that way for long, so for the first time in its history, the IWC can be certified fixie-friendly (well, fixie-tolerant, anyway).  Only the 100 milers will tackle the biggest climb, Pea Ridge, but ALL riders will get to criss-cross Grey Hill at around Mile 7, which can seem a lot bigger in the afternoon than you might remember from the morning (especially if you have 93 miles in your legs by then).

At the Ironworks Century, we strive to be a learning organization.  Last year we learned from the Tour de Blue that big ol’ dill pickle spears are a great electrolyte-replenishing snack, and from the Hot Hundred that ice-water soaked towels are wonderfully re-invigorating on a hot day, so we made sure to feature both at our 2014 rest stops.  Then the BBC Century reminded us how tasty a mid-ride bacon ‘n’ ‘mater sandwich can be, so at the 2015 Ironworks Century expect all the usual stuff,  plus MORE pickles, MORE iced towels – and at the rest stop in Montevallo we’ll have BACON!

Tri-State 100

The TriStates 100 is the only ride in the area that expands three states (Alabama, Florida, and Georgia) in one exciting ride. The course is challenging without being difficult. The TriStates Century route is 102 miles and encompasses all three states. Our 69 mile course takes you through a tour of eastern Houston county. The newest route is 41 miles long and is a hybrid of the short route and the metric. The 30 mile course is a shorter tour through Houston county.

Started in 2002, on what was a spur of the moment idea, the TriStates 100 has become a first class event and fund raiser for the Children’s Hospital of Alabama. In 2014, we donated more than $30,000 to the Pediatric Cancer unit (Dawn Pitchford Account) of the Children’s Hospital.

All proceeds go to the Dawn Pitchford Fund, which helps with the non-medical needs of the children with cancer. Dawn Pitchford was an amazing girl diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia when she was 14. She noticed the other patients without simple comforts like stuffed animals, balloons, flowers, normal pajamas, bedroom shoes, and headwraps. Dawn spent the money that people sent her to help other people. Even after she’s gone, her selflessness continues and the Tri-States 100 is thrilled to help such a great cause.
