To all who are interested in volunteering,
Hi everyone my name is Grant Chaffin. Most of you know me from James Brothers Bicycles. I am sending this message to ask for volunteers for the upcoming criterium in Opelika. This is hopefully going to be a big event for our area. I say hopefully because without the help of a large volunteer force, it will be hard to make this event a success. So, I want to give you a few details so that you know exactly what you are getting into when you volunteer your time.
The race will be held on SATURDAY, APRIL 13TH, 2013. Criteriums are very exciting, spectator friendly, action packed cycling events. This will most likely be one of the more exciting volunteer gigs that you have ever signed up for. If you have never seen a criterium just check out this link, they do a pretty good job of explaining. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUBEYCqUbNQ
We have broken up the volunteer slots into two different 3 HOUR BLOCKS. 12:30 to 3:30 & 3:30 to 6:30. In order to volunteer you will have to fill out a USA cycling wavier, which is a very short and easy process. On the back of this wavier there is space for you to specify which time block you would like to volunteer for. But please know that you are welcome to volunteer for the entire 6 hour slot, as it is going to be very entertaining to watch. I have plenty of copies of the wavier at James Brothers Bikes, so feel free to drop by to fill one out during normal business hours. If this is not possible for you please email me and I will be happy to email the Adobe document and you can fill it out at your leisure and bring it on the day of the event. Please notify me as early as possible if you choose to use this method.
The actual racing for this event will be going on from 1:00p.m. until 6:30p.m., and the largest number of volunteers will be needed during this time frame. Also, the main type of volunteer activity will be COURSE MARSHALL. This volunteer activity will consist of being posted at a specific street barricade/cones to coordinate the movement of cars and pedestrians on and around the race course. To be very specific, the roads will be closed prior to the race starting and there will not be any street traffic on the course. However, if there are cars left in a parking spot that is enclosed by the race course and the motorist needs to remove their car from the course we will need to be able to coordinate this movement. Also, there will be motorist who do not realize that the roads are closed and arrive at a barricade. These motorist will need to be directed away from the race course. There will be 4 Opelika Police Officers will be be on hand to assist us in any way we need. As far as pedestrians, a course marshal will just need to make sure that the pedestrians cross the street in a timely manner.
So, as a course marshal you are welcome to bring a folding camp chair, hydration, snacks, and an umbrella to post up in a very comfortable fashion, so that you can both enjoy watching the race, and help us to keep the course clear. Course marshals will be given direct communication with the on hand Police officers, so that if any situation arises you will have quick and powerful assistance. We are also going to have relief marshals on hand so that if for some reason you do need to leave your post, you will be able to do so. We are also going to try to have food for all volunteer staff. This has not been set in stone yet but I will do my best to keep you posted on all food developments.
Thank you in advance for your help and I look forward to putting on a successful event!
